Reasons for a working class perspective. What is wrong with a nonclass perspective. Rooting class struggle anarchism in an analysis of capitalism, a strategic orienation, and a moral perspective.
What is Class Struggle Anarchism?
PART 1: Why the Working Class
Recently an activist friend, who has been influenced by Michael Albert’s Parecon program, wrote to me. He asked, “Why should we call ourselves class struggle anarchists instead of feminist-antiracist-green-class struggle anarchists?” In other words, why single out the struggle of the working class? At least his approach includes class conflict as one of the aspects of social struggle. There are many, liberals and radicals, who completely reject class struggle. Many denounce unions (from the right). Hardt and Negri have been influential in replacing the working class theoretically with a concept of the “multitude.”

On Tuesday, May1, tens of millions of working people and their supporters took to the streets on International Workers’ Day to stand up for their rights and interests against the growing pressure of globalized corporate capitalism. In places as varied as Los Angeles and Istanbul, from San Luis Potosi to Zimbabwe to Teheran, demonstrators were met with stiff, even brutal, repression from the ruling regimes. The zeitgeist of our time is clearly moving in the direction of a unity between globalized corporate interests and repressive national regimes. There is only one force that can counter this encroachment on liberty and equality, still best summed up in that venerable clarion call: “Workers of the World, Unite!” This past Tuesday, workers on every continent did just that, and my roundup of Global MayDay 2007 is in the extended copy.

Greece, Athens 4-7 May: An anarchist forum, a demo & a riot (photos) & the co-operation of the European Social Forum with the police in arresting dozens of innocent passers-by and bystanders and charging seventeen of them.
For the first time in Greece, between the 4th and 7th of May the Libertarian Anarchist Antiauthoritarian Forum took place ( http://www.libertariananarchistforum.com/ ). This forum (with open discussions, video projections, theatrical presentations, photography exhibitions, anarchist books & periodicals stalls and a radio station broadcasting the discussions live on fm and on the internet) was organized by anarchists in contrast to the European Social forum that was also taking place in Athens during the same dates. The basic principles for its formation can be found here: http://www.libertariananarchistforum.com/en/main.htm
Photographs from the Anarchist’s forum can be found here: http://athens.indymedia.org/front.php3?lang=el&article_id=504274
